The Official MDA Blog

This week's PhonepayPlus Forum introduced a discussion paper around the upcoming consultation for their 12th Code of Practice. It was also the platform for the release of their Annual Review, the headline of which was that mobile complaints are significantly down, year on year.

There was a 36% drop in complaints about mobile services from April 2008 to March 2008. PhonepayPlus should obviously take some credit for measures introduced in their mobile review. But it's also symptomatic of industry's own actions and improvement in self regulation, and the general economic downturn.

London's Royal Statistical Society hosted our event, "Monetising the mobile internet in tough times" on Monday 8th June, sponsored by the DCKTN.  In the following post I've tried to illustrate the key highlights, but please feel free to correct me if I've grossly misrepresented anyone or anything.

We're gearing up for our event this coming Monday 8th June, "Monetising the Mobile Internet", which promises to be a cracking event full of insightful presentations on how to generate revenue over the mobile web.

If you can't attend or didn't register in time, then fear not.  You can follow the highlights and buzz around the event through the realtime Twitter backchannel, using hashtag #MMI09.

If you're an MDA member (and look-out for a special membership offer on Monday if you are attending), then you'll be able to access presentations after the event through our website, and even view video content.  We'll keep you posted about when that content is published.

See you there.

Double PRS lessons - PhonepayPlus educate tweens

Premium phone paid services regulator, PhonepayPlus generally receives a lot of flak from the industry it regulates.  Sometimes it's justified, sometimes it isn't.  Bodies with the authority to regulate and punish seldom win popularity contests or gratitude, even after resolving issues.

During the last quarter of 2008, PhonepayPlus launched a consumer-targeted public relations campaign concentrated on 13-16 year olds.  It attempted to warn about the dangers of mobile premium rate services, yet also engage and help to generate enthusiasm and positive attitudes about the medium.

The in-app upsell and mobile games

Would you like any cakes or muffins with that coffee today?  Can I get you a shirt with that suit?  The upsell is everywhere.

In-application upselling is set to exceed $14billion by 2014, according to the latest Juniper Research report.  Juniper says the ‘freemium' business model, in which free-to-download applications are monetised through subsequent micropayments from within the application, will become increasingly prevalent.

The phrase of "two nations divided by a common language" to describe the differences between America and the UK is generally ascribed to Bernard Shaw.  Looking at a recent presentation on mHealth, it occurred to me that a very similar comment could be coined for the way we use our mobile phones.

Is VOIP REALLY an imminent threat to mobile voice?

3UK's largest marketing campaign for some time, concentrating on the promotion of Skype and its bold claim to be "Changing Mobile Forever" has clearly been intended to ruffle feathers and get people talking.

Happy to oblige, 3UK...

The Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 introduced a new offence of corporate manslaughter which applies to corporate bodies in both the public and private sectors. It only applies in circumstances where an organisation owed a duty of care to the victim under the law of negligence. The offence can be punishable by an unlimited fine and orders for remedial action.

Mobile Device Management
Mobile Devices are getting increasingly sophisticated and because of this they should be treated no differently to a laptop computer when it comes to mobile device management. Just like their laptop big brothers, mobile devices and smart phones can access the internet/intranet, carry large amounts of corporate data, send and receive email and run sophisticated applications. Add to this that most mobile devices (under normal working conditions) will do this remotely and wirelessly and are therefore even more susceptible to loss or theft than laptops, you should have a mobile device management policy and supporting infrastructure in place.
